The new Speech Submission Application (Java applet) is now live.

Users no longer need to register with VoxForge to contribute speech.

You just need a current version of the Java Run-time Environment (1.5 or 1.6) on your computer.  Instructions for installing Java are provided in the Java Troubleshooting Guide.

If you have Java installed, the Java Run-time Environment on your PC will display a Security Warning pop-up when you go to the Read page.  Just click Run to activate the Java Applet.  If you have questions or concerns about the contents of the certificate, please see the Java Security Warning page.

You record 10 prompts at once, and can view the waveform display after each recording.  By pressing the upload button when you are completed, all your recordings and "ReadMe" information (i.e. speaker characteristics, recording information and prompts) are automatically packaged into a zip file and uploaded to the VoxForge Repository server (at http://read.voxforge1.org).

You still have the option of submitting speech using Audacity or using your  telephone.

Any feedback (or speech submissions) would be greatly appreciated,

thanks,

Ken

The Java applet is great (and I'm not a big fan of Java)! One thing that is a real annoyance to me is that I can't do anything while I am waiting to upload. We have very asynchronous ADSL here (only 128k upload), so uploading is quite slow.

I have tried opening two instances of the applet, in two windows, and recording the second while the first was uploading, but this does not work. I'm not sure the best way that it could be done, but it would be great if one could record another set of samples while the applet was uploading.

Perhaps clicking "upload" could reveal a button for "record more". The applet would be identical but the "upload" button would be greyed out and the bar would show the progress of the first upload. On my connection, I could nearly record a new set while the first was uploading, meaning that I could submit almost twice as many.

Hi Luna-Tick,

Glad you like the app!

re: Asynchronous recording and uploading

I created a ticket for this (Ticket #360) ... I'll have to look in to this.

Note: that I have been working (off and on) on a way to allow users to submit more than 10 prompts at a time - using tabs which contain groups of 10 prompts, for a total of 40 or 50 prompts ... this might partially address your concern.
