I finished the task according to Launchpad. For the Turkish prompts corresponding to your English prompts I have used my own Turkish sentences so there is no problem regarding copyright issues and the sentences are phonetically rich to include all of the Turkish sounds and various combinations of Turkish syllables. I'm looking forward to see VoxForge in Turkish so that I can publicly announce it in various places and call people to come and visit the site, use the applet to read those sentences aloud to record. :-)

Any progress in integrating the completed Turkish translation (in Launchpad) to the main VoxForge site so far?

What are the main Turkish dialects?  Launchpad was not set up to collect these.

thanks,

Ken

I could not understand your question and what you meant by "Launchpad was not set up to collect these." very well. According to Wikipedia: "Istanbul Turkish is established as the official standard language of Turkey." (And that is also what I speak as my mother tongue as do the majority of Turkish people I met during the last 30 years. It is also used by more than %90 of Turkish TV and radio channels.): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_language#Dialects

For what was Launchpad set up? Did I do something wrong by typing Turkish sentences under the English prompt sentences?

>I could not understand your question and what you meant by

>"Launchpad was not set up to collect these."

The Launchpad site (https://launchpad.net/voxforge) was set up by a VoxForge user (Daniël H.), not me.  Launchpad is part of the Ubuntu group, and was set up to provide translations (among other things...) for vairous Ubuntu packages.

>"Istanbul Turkish is established as the official standard language of

>Turkey."

OK, so only one dialect for Turkish.

Please make sure this is all you want, because the whole testing/publishing process to get the SpeechSubmission applet in  production is manual and tedious...

>Did I do something wrong by typing Turkish sentences under the

>English prompt sentences?

No.  This is the first time I am using Luanchpad for a new language - it requires much more cutting and pasting than our usual process.

I will set up a Turkish section on the VoxForge site (I will cut and pasting your translations from the Launchpad site).

I will give your username permissions to edit these to correct any errors (see here for a quick howto on our CMS).

Once everything id OK, then we can make it public.

thanks,

Ken

OK, I'll check the Turkish version of the site and the Java speech submission applet as soon as you inform me and then you  can make it public. Thank you very much for your help.

Hi emres,

Please review the Turkish translations for the VoxForge site here:

http://www.voxforge.org/tr

Please translate this page: Turkish Read page (it is not set up on the Launchpad site).  Your username now has permissions to let you do so...

Please review the Turkish translations of the SpeechSubmission applet carefully - make sure the prompt sentences look correct, that the translations are OK, etc. and let me know if there are any changes required before I commit everything.

Please note that once I commit this version of the SpeechSubmission applet, I will not be making any further changes to it until another language is added or a new feature release is created.

thanks,

Ken

I visited http://www.voxforge.org/tr and checked the translation, corrected a few words. I have also translated the "Turkish Read page" however I'm a little bit confused because there are lots of other pages that are in English and without corresponding Turkish pages, e.g. http://www.voxforge.org/home/submit http://www.voxforge.org/home/docs/faq/faq/speech-submission-mirrors http://www.voxforge.org/home/read2/recording-how-to etc. Also the 'license' etc. pop-up pages that are opened when I click on the relevant buttons on the applet do not have translations (because they were not included in the Launchpad set). They don't seem crucial for starting to collect Turkish speech samples but nevertheless I wanted to be sure if it is OK to leave them out.

To repeat: The only things I can see as translated to Turkish now are

And the Java applet itself. Is that enough?

>They don't seem crucial for starting to collect Turkish speech samples

Correct.

>but nevertheless I wanted to be sure if it is OK to leave them out.

yes it is OK - at least that is what we have done for other languages...  :)

>And the Java applet itself. Is that enough?

Yes - for the other pages, people always have the Google translate option...

You can translate them if you would like, but our CMS is not very multilingual, and I have to create a duplicate page on the 'Turkish side' of the web site for each page to be translated...

Please try a few test submissions...

And to make sure the prompts are appearing as they should for Turkish, refresh the Read page a few times and review the prompts to make sure they look OK... (it should be a different set each time... with some overlap).. this is the time to catch any errors in the prompts.

thanks,

Ken

OK, then. So it seems the system is basically ready for Turkish, except these issues in the http://www.voxforge.org/tr/read page:

- In the applet I see as one of the speech dialects as "Istanbul Turkish". It is not translated. It should read as "İstanbul Türkçesi".

- I tried to record my speech to see how it proceeds but I got the "ERROR java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (javax.sound.sampled.AudioPermission record)". I tried it on the English version, too, with same error message (I'm running Ubuntu GNU/Linux 10.10 on my Lenovo thinkpad).

PS: I checked the prompts by refreshing page about 9-10 times and I did not see any problematic sentence.
