Thanks Ralf,

I'm glad to have the honor of turning the German corpus into a multi person corpus Laughing

Where I was unsure of pronunciation I listened to your submission. I'll try to submit more in the future. If my pronunciation ever sounds ridiculously Dutch/foreign do let me know. It might even be a good way to improve on my German. Wink

How to learn German very fast

OK, Robin, I will let you know if something would sound strange/unacceptable.

If you want to improve your German, maybe the following method is something for you:.

1. Buy yourself the speech recognition software DNS 9 Standard German edition.  You can get it for about 70 €.  Take a look here:  http://geizhals.at/eu/a209664.html.

2. Buy yourself the German edition of a TV series on DVD.  I would recommend you to buy the TV series 24 (my favorite TV series), because it is very good entertainment and there are a lot of dialogs.  You can get it at eBay: http://tinyurl.com/2tnhtz

3.  You can watch it with media player classic, in the German language and don't forget to turn the German subtitles on.  Listen to the TV series with your headset.  At the same time, when you're listening you can dictate into the DragonPad in the German language.

I guarantee you: this is probably the cheapest way to learn the German language, and a very entertaining one. If DNS 9 transcribes your German words correctly, then your pronunciation was correct.

This method works. Cool I use this method to learn the English language.

Greetings, Ralf

Sounds like a good tip. Esp. for learning pronunciation. Of course in the Netherlands we have a bit of an advantage in that sense, because we never dub films. We always use subtitles and are therefore familiar with the sounds of other languages.

I also noticed before that training my speech recognition software (Philips FreeSpeech) was indeed helpful for learning to properly pronounce certain (difficult) words in foreign languages.

Your approach sort of puts it all together, so I can see how that might work. Interesting!

Hi Robin,

If you want to improve your pronunciation of the German language you should do both: continue to submit to voxforge.org in the German language *and* use my method to learn a foreign language.  I will continue to submit in the German language covering a good bandwidth of vocabulary.

How good is the Philips FreeSpeech?  I have never heard of that program.  You are using Philips FreeSpeech to learn the pronunciation of several foreign languages?  Which languages do you learn?

I am learning French and Spanish, but at the moment it would be too early for me to submit speech in those languages.  I need more practice and a speech recognition software that is capable of the French and Spanish language.

My approach of learning foreign languages might be an exotic one.  But if you want to have fast results, this might be a way to go.

FreeSpeech was quite good actually. I still have a copy, but unfortunately Philips discontinued the product. It was back then the only product that actually shipped with 13 languages! (that included some dialects like Austrian German and Brazilian Portuguese)  You could switch back and forth between languages (though that requires a bit of time). In that sense it was quite unique. Nowadays it's not really an option anymore, since the product is not really compatible with windows XP (well you need admin privileges which is not really save practice under windows - even though most private users do this all the time).

I am not really learning languages this way, but I did notice it helped in the past. I do try to master some languages by reading, learning grammar, watching films etc. (mostly French right now. Listening and comprehending is usually my weak spot, not so much the pronunciation.

When a method works it's a good method no matter how exotic it might be. Watching a film with the subtitles in the same language as the audio is something I've done before and it works.

submit speech files in the French language?

Hello Robin,

13 languages with only one speech recognition software - that sounds pretty much.

This is the weakness of commercial proprietary software: they might discontinue the development of their software.

I don't care about the admin privileges under Win XP.  I am running Win XP with admin privileges, this might be a potential security risk.  But I don't have problems with it.

If you don't have problems with the French pronunciation, why don't you submit speech files in the French language?  You could be the one who does the first step. You have a good microphone, the sound quality of your submission is very good.  So why not submit in German, English, and French?

Greetings, Ralf

and Dutch of course Laughing

I will one day, but right now I should concentrate on Dutch. That's my mothertongue so I never doubt my pronunciation. Also it's the language that I want the most to be supported by applications like Gnome-voice-control, Julius etc.

I've been modifying a Dutch dictionary that we need in order to create Dutch models.

Hello Robin,

How do you modify a (Dutch) dictionary?  Maybe you can give me a tip, what I can do to support the development of a German speech recognition software.  I am planning to read the documents here at voxforge.org.  At the moment, I don't know what I can do. Undecided The only thing that I know is how to submit speech files in the German and in the English language.  So I have to learn something about the different projects.  But where would be the best place for me to start?
